120
dogs and 16 cats were sterilized on June 25-26, 2011. This
will
avoid over 9 million puppies and kittens being born in the next six
years.

$77.75 was collected from the guardians, or the equivalent of 58 cents
per animal.
Cantus
Panama donated $1,000, Los Angeles de los Animales $500, Mr. Gustavo
Villalaz $100 and the Health Ministry donated syringes, gloves and
gauze. It takes $25 per dog and $12 per cat for Spay/Panama
to
breakeven. At this blitz, with the generous donations, 59% of
the
costs were covered.
The Lord works in mysterious and marvelous ways. Los Angeles de
los Animales informed us of an additional donation of $1,300, which
means that 98% of the sterilization costs were covered. Glory be
to His name.
All animals are registered and tagged with a
number, name of guardian and weight. From Los Angeles,
Karina,
Hirakel, Monica, Osvaldo, David & Peggy, Ginette
& Jose and Gustavo & Graziella.

Prep station was manned by Alberto, Ronald,
Joanne Jennings from Virginia Tech and Abby Moore from UVA.
Animals
get shaved, incision area is desinfected, all animals receive a shot of
antibiotic and pain medication. The dogs get one ear tattooed.

Daniel, Tabitha Wolf from Oregon State and Jason
Wei from UC Davis did the post-op station.
Animals
get the incision cleaned, dewormed, receive a shot of vitamins, the
ears are cleaned and the animals are sprayed against fleas a ticks;
dogs get the rabies vaccine. Cats get one ear notched.

Spay/Panama
has 44 spay packs and each pack is autoclaved before being used on
another animal. Having seven veterinarians sterilizing with
the
Quick Spay Method, keep Rebeca and Dioselina on their toes the whole
time.
Dog
on the left got a tumor removed and the dog on the right got hit with a
machete while defending her home from a thief; the jugular vein was
missed by a fraction.

Equipment
and surgical supplies were taken on Friday, June 24 to Chepo. Very sad
to see dog carcasses at the side of the road. As we approach the
checkpoint in Las Garzas, Pacora, we thought we had spotted another
dead dog with the police. NO, IT WAS ALIVE. We picked up Chepito and
told the Police he would be back. Chepito came to Spay/Panama to be
fixed, vaccinated, dewormed, and bathed. The intent was to
drop
off Chepito on our way to the sterilization blitz, but we past the
checkpoint, so Chepito stayed with us during the two-day blitz.
After the blitz, we took him back. Chepito did not seem
pleased
to be back; he sniffed around, checked the area and as we were leaving,
he came running and put his two paws on the door with pleading eyes to
come back with us. We had no other choice than to bring Chepito back.
Chepito must have had a home once, he was already fixed. Please
consider giving a permanent loving home to Chepito; he is a very quiet
and loving dog; very well behaved. About 4 years old in good health.
Please call Spay/Panama at 261.5542. We can't keep him because we are
not a shelter. If you live overseas and are interested in
adopting Chepito, Spay/Panama will cover all the necessary paperwork,
you need only to pay the transportation; for more information write to doctor@spaypanama.org
