9 de Enero, Regional de San Miguelito

How do we really make a difference to improve the welfare of the animals? ---- BY ADDRESSING THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM:  controlling the overpopulation of dogs and cats by offering low-cost and in many cases at no cost the services of quality spay/neuter services.

Spay/Panama has been acknowledged by renowned international organizations has a group doing things the right way to help the animals.

On Sunday, November 14, 2010, 134 animals were sterilized at the community of 9 de Enero.  This was done in conjunction with the Health Ministry.

95 dogs and 39 cats were sterilized.  Of the 95 dogs, 66 were female dogs and of the 39 cats, 32 were female cats.  With this sterilization campaign, over 4 million dogs and over 13 million cats have been kept from being born, considering that a female dog and her offsprings can be the source of 67,000 puppies in six years and a female cat and her offsprings can be the source of 420,000 cats in seven years.

In an effort to get more people involved in the cause, we have asked Los Angeles de los Animales to join the effort and at this blitz, we had the new Treasurer and Vice-Treasurer collecting the donations, which amounted to $351.65 or the equivalent of $2.63 per animal --- well below the amount required to breakeven.

Spay/Panama is currently sterilizing an average of 500 animals per month.  We have the capacity to triplicate this amount, however, we need the funding for the surgeries.  Most people in the poor areas already know the benefits of sterilizing the animals....the obstacle is that up to now the services were beyond their reach.

Help us reach more animals, help us lend a hand to the low-income guardians, the rescuers and the feeders.
