La Universidad de Panamá, el Ministerio de Salud, la Junta Comunal y Spay/Panamá organizaron una campaña de esterilizaciones en este corregimiento y las comunidades aledañas el 18 de mayo de 2008, para controlar el número de animales callejeros.  El Honorable Representante, Nelson Vergara fue la fuerza impulsora del proyecto; en todo momento actuó, no solo de palabras, si no en acciones para habilitar el local de las operaciones y coordinar todas las esterilizaciones.  El Ministerio de Salud coordinó las vacunaciones, el manejo del material orgánico y los anuncios de las esterilizaciones.  Spay/Panamá se encargó de las esterilizaciones  de los animales.  La Universidad de Panamá fue el eje organizador/coordinador de todas las entidades.  The University of Panama, the Health Ministry, the Community Council and Spay/Panama organized a sterilization blitz on May 18, 2008, to control the number of homeless animals.   The Honorable Nelson Vergara, elected council official was the major force of the project; at all times, he took actions to fix the operation center and coordinate the appointments for sterilizations.  The Health Ministry coordinated the vaccinations, disposal of organic material and the ads of the sterilization blitz.  Spay/Panama was responsible for the operations.  The University of Panama was the center coordinator of all the players.

Spay/Panamá pudo operar, desparasitar, rociar a los animales contra las pulgas y garrapatas, limpiar las orejas y darles una inyección de vitaminas en forma gratuita a un total de 130 animales (108 perras + 13 perros + 9 gatas) gracias al apoyo del Marchig Animal Welfare Trust.  Spay/Panama was able to operate, deworm, spray against fleas and ticks, clean ears and give an injection of vitamins to a total of 130 animals (108 female dogs + 13 male dogs + 9 cats) at no cost thanks to the support of the Marchig Animal Welfare Trust.

Las mesas y lámparas quirúrgicas se llevaron al centro el viernes en la tarde.  The surgical tables and lamps were taken to the center on Friday afternoon.


En el amanecer del 18 de mayo el equipo restante fue trasladado.  At the crack of dawn of May 18, the rest of the equipment was taken.

El trabajo de Spay/Panamá parece fácil y muy fluido gracias a nuestros maravillosos y leales voluntarios Alberto, Rebeca, Olga, Daniel y Anibal que se encargan de reabastecer, empacar, transportar e instalar todo el equipo en los centros para que los doctores puedan comenzar a operar sin contratiempos.  Tenemos muchos otros excelentes voluntarios que están siempre listos para ayudar.  The work of Spay/Panama seems easy and smooth thanks to the marvelous support of our faithful volunteers Alberto, Rebeca, Olga, Daniel and Anibal that are entrusted to restock, pack, transport and install all the equipment at the centers for the doctors to start operating with no delays.  We have many more excellent volunteers that are ready to assist.


La gente comenzó a llegar a tempranas horas con sus mascotas.  The people started coming early morning with their pets.


El Honorable Representate Vergara tuvo la amabilidad de hacernos un servicio; bueno no tenía techo ni puerta, pero que alivio fue tenerlo.  The Honorable Councilman Vergara was kind enough to install a toilet, well it did not have a roof or a door, but what an enormous relief to have it.


Cinco veterinarios operaron:Five vets operated:  Dr. Carlos Gueulette, Dr. René Guajardo, Dra. Letty de Guajardo, Dr. Augusto Barragán y Dra. Raquel Fuster.  

Bajo el Convenio de Cooperación con la Universidad de Panamá, diez estudiantes de veterinaria trabajaron como asistentes a los veterinarios de Spay/Panamá:  Ernesto, Amarilys, Juan Francisco, Neysi, Andrea, Keyla, Angel, Gloria, Dasmenia y Kristel.  Under the Cooperation Agreement with the University of Panama, ten vet students worked as vet assistants to Spay/Panama veterinarians:  Ernesto, Amarilys, Juan Francisco, Neysi, Andrea, Keyla, Angel, Gloria, Dasmenia and Kristel.






Bajo nuestro arreglo de trabajo con la organización World Vets, la estudiante Christie vino de Nueva York para trabajar en este evento.  Under our working arrangements with World Vets, Christie came down from New York to work with us.


Se repartieron comida de mascotas a los guardianes que trajeron sus mascotas a operar.  Aqui vemos a la estudiante Amarilys haciendo entrega de comida felina Science Diet, gentilmente donada por Pet World.  Pet food was distributed to the guardians that brought their pets to be operated.  Here we see the vet student Amarilys giving Science Diet cat food donated by Pet World.

Esta campaña fue tan exitosa que ya se está planificando repetir el evento el 15 de junio.  This blitz was so successful that plans are being made to repeat the event on June 15th.

Para darles una perspectiva del efecto a largo plazo de esta campaña de operaciones, sepan que al operar 108 hembras ese día, hemos eliminado la posibilidad de traer al mundo un aproximado de 540 perritos este año (estimando que cada hembra puede tener una camada de 5 perritos – 108 x 5 = 540) y el año siguiente, si estimamos que de esas camadas, 3 son hembras, eliminamos la posibilidad de traer al mundo un aproximado de 2,160 perritos (108 hembras + 324 hijas = 432 hembras x 5 = 2,160).  Y los números van subiendo cada año.  To put in perspective the long-term effect of this operation campaign, let it be known that by operating 108 female dogs that day, the possibiity of bringing to this world approximately 540 puppies has been eliminated this year (estimating that each female dog can have a litter of 5 pups - 108 x 5 = 540) and the following year, the possibility of having 2,160 more puppies has been elimated (108 female dogs + 324 daughters = 432 female dogs x 5 = 2,160).  And each year the numbers go up.
